Gila monsters are one of two venomous lizards in the world. (The other is the Mexican Beaded lizard.) The thick body is unusual for a lizard. Adults are 18 to 24 inches long. They are noted for clamping their jaws when biting. They hiss to warn intruders that they are getting too close.
